Who can participate?

In order to vote in Maryland, you must be:

    • A U.S. citizen;
    • A resident of Maryland; and
    • At least 18 years old by November 3, 2020 — this means if you are 17 by the primary
      election but will be 18 by the general, you will be able to vote for Bernie in the primary!
    • If you have been convicted of a felony, you will automatically regain your voting rights after
      being released from prison. However, this does not apply if you were buying or selling votes —
      your right to vote will only be restored by a pardon from your governor.

Where and when do I vote?

The election is now all absentee ballot. Everyone in the state was mailed a ballot and ballots may be printed and mailed. In-person absentee voting is reduced to Tuesday, May 26, 2020, to noon, Monday, June 1, 2020, pursuant to IEC Order 2020-40

Do I have to be a registered Democrat to vote for Bernie?

Yes, you must be registered as a Democrat in order to vote for Bernie. You must change your party to Democrat online by May 12 to vote for Bernie.

How do I vote by mail?

Any registered voter can vote by mail. All registered voters will automatically be sent a ballot.

Requesting your absentee ballot:

  • Click here to request an absentee mail ballot online. May 29 is the deadline to download a ballot online.
  • You can also fill out this form and mail, fax, or email it to your local board of elections. May 26 is the deadline to request a ballot be mailed or faxed to you.
  • June 2 is the deadline to request an absentee ballot in-person from your local board of elections. The ballot is also due on June 2.

Returning your vote-by-mail ballot:

    • The deadline to return your completed mail ballot is June 2.
    • If you mail in your ballot, it must be postmarked by June 2. You will send it to your local board of elections.
    • You can also return your completed ballot in person. You must drop it off at your local board of elections by 8pm on June 2.

Do I need to bring my ID?

No, you are not required to bring an ID when voting, in most cases.

If you registered to vote by mail without providing any form of ID, you will be asked to show your ID when voting. In addition, if you are registering to vote or changing your address during early voting, you will be asked for your ID. To see a full list of acceptable forms of ID, please click here.

What is provisional voting?

If your name does not appear on the voter list, if you do not have a photo ID with you, or if the poll workers question your eligibility for any reason, do not give up voting for Bernie!

First, make sure you are at the right polling location. If you are at the wrong polling location and are able, make sure you get to your assigned polling location.

If it’s confirmed that you are at the right polling place but your name isn’t on the voter list, ask for a provisional ballot! You have the right to cast a provisional ballot even if your name isn’t on the voter list. It will be counted after the election official determines that you were eligible to vote.

Can I bring anyone to help me? Can I bring an interpreter?

Yes! You have the right to bring someone into the voting booth to help you vote, as long as they do not represent your employer or union. You can bring a relative, a friend or anyone else you trust.

In addition, every polling place is required to be accessible and have voting systems that allow voters with disabilities to vote independently and privately.
