Who can participate?
In order to vote in Louisiana, you must be:
- A U.S. citizen;
- A resident of Louisiana; and
- At least 18 years old by July 11, 2020.
If you have been convicted of a felony, your voting rights will be restored after completing your sentence, including prison time, parole and probation. In 2019, a state law passed that allowed anyone convicted of a felony who had not been incarcerated within the last five years to have their voting rights restored unless they were convicted of an election office. Where and when do I vote?
You can find your polling place here. Polling places will be open from 6am to 8pm. Anyone in line by 8pm will be allowed to vote!
In-Person voting will be held on June 9, 2020 and June 20, 2020 through July 4, 2020.
Please take precaution if you are voting in person. Wear a protective mask and bring your own pen to fill out your ballot.
How do I register to vote for Bernie?
You can register to vote online here. The deadline for online registration is June 21, 2020.
You can register in person at any of the following locations. If you register in-person, the deadline is June 23, 2020.
- Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles;
- Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services;
- WIC offices;
- food stamp offices;
- Medicaid offices;
- offices serving persons with disabilities such as the Deaf Action Centers and Independent Living Offices; or
- Armed Forces recruitment offices.
You must be registered:
- By June 21, 2020 — 20 days prior to an election if registering through the GeauxVote Online Registration System with a Louisiana driver’s license or Louisiana special ID card
- or by June 11, 2020 — 30 days prior to an election if registering in person or by mail to be eligible to vote in that particular election. If mailing in an application, the application or envelope must be postmarked 30 days prior to the first election in which you seek to vote.
You can also submit a voter registration application by mail. The deadline to register by mail is May 20, 2020. Download the Louisiana Voter Registration Application, complete and mail it to your local Registrar of Voters Office.
Do I have to be a registered Democrat to vote for Bernie?
Yes, in order to vote for Bernie, you must be a registered Democrat. You can update your voter registration and party affiliation online or by mail.

How do I vote by mail?
Registered voters are allowed to vote by mail with a permissible excuse. Please see here for a list of permissible excuses.
Requesting your absentee ballot:
- The deadline to request an absentee ballot is July 7 by 4:30pm.
- If you are military or an overseas voter: July 10 by 4:30pm.
- You can request an absentee ballot online or by filling out this form and mailing it to your local Registrar of Voters Office (list also available at the bottom of this form)
Returning your absentee ballot:
- The deadline for your registrar of voters to receive your completed absentee ballot is Friday, June 10 by 4:30pm.
- If you are military or an overseas voter: July 11 by 8:00pm.
- You can also drop it off at your registrar of voters office in person by June 19.
Do I need to bring my ID?
Yes, you are required to bring a photo ID when voting. Accepted forms of ID include a driver’s license, a Louisiana special ID, and a LA Wallet digital driver’s license. For a full list of accepted forms of ID, please click here.
If you’re already registered, you can bring your voter information card to the Office of Motor Vehicles to receive a free Louisiana special ID card.
If you do not have an accepted ID, you can still vote by completing a voter identification affidavit.
What is provisional voting?
If your name does not appear on the voter list, if you do not have a photo ID with you, or if the poll workers question your eligibility for any reason, do not give up voting for Bernie!
First, make sure you are at the right polling location. If you are at the wrong polling location and are able, make sure you get to your assigned polling location.
If it’s confirmed that you are at the right polling place but your name isn’t on the voter list, ask for a provisional ballot! You have the right to cast a provisional ballot even if your name isn’t on the voter list. It will be counted after the election official determines that you were eligible to vote.
Can I bring anyone to help me? Can I bring an interpreter?
Yes! You have the right to bring someone into the voting booth to help you vote, as long as they do not represent your employer or union. You can bring a relative, a friend or anyone else you trust.
In addition, every polling place is required to be accessible and have voting systems that allow voters with disabilities to vote independently and privately.
